Maya’s life is often stressful and she doesn’t take the time to care for herself as she should. Each year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compiles statistics on the leading causes of death. In 2021, cerebrovascular disease, which includes strokes, accounted for 162,890 deaths. About 25 percent of people who recover from a stroke have another one within their lifetime. On average, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds.

Maya’s ischemic stroke was unnecessary and preventable, and she does not have to end up as another death statistic. As a member of her healthcare team, you will continue to evaluate Maya’s progress. A care plan will need to be in place to ensure that she doesn’t develop additional complications or die as a result of her stroke. With the other members of Maya’s care team, use the myStation® PowerPoint presentation to develop a care plan. Your plan will cover information while in the hospital, but should also help Maya become healthier and possibly reverse some of the effects from her stroke.
