Below is a summary of Dan’s EHR activity during the two hours he is in the ED. As a pharmacist, you are responsible for ensuring Dan receives the proper medications and dosage ordered by the physician. You are also responsible for reviewing any adverse reactions Dan might have with his current medications. Using his EHR, Virtual Physical Exam (VPE) and Internet research, answer the questions and be prepared to discuss the responses with the rest of Dan’s health care team.

  1. Review Dan’s VPE: Dan is immediately put on Activase through an intravenous (IV) line in the arm. Use information from VPE to explain this medication and why it is important for Dan to take it as soon as possible.

  2. Internet Research: The physician prescribes nitroglycerin and heparin. Why?

  3. Review Dan’s EHR. You notice that the physician has recommended several medications. What are these medications?

Internet Research: Which medication will help lower his lipid panel results and how will it do so?
